Here I am working with actors during the production on my latest short film.
I grew up loving movies. Some of my earliest memories are seeing films. Jaws when I was six years old. Robocop not too long after that. The SpongeBob Square Pants movie.
When I make film, my goal is always to tell the story as best I can and as real as I can. As someone who spends a lot of their time writing I spend about as much time thinking and reading. My screenplays and my films usually come from whatever I find interesting at the moment. Whether it's a couple playing out the end of their relationship on a hilltop or a horror story about a father who believes he must sacrifice his son to save the world, I throw myself full force into whatever I'm working on. I am there to service the story. Not a message, not an agenda. A story. A story could be between two people. It could be between one. But every plot contains with in it a story, a journey for a character where lessons are learned, and battles are won and lost.
One thing I've always been inspired by when filmmaking is great filmmakers and subsequently great films. Some of my inspirations include:
Paul Schrader (Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, The Last Temptation of Christ, and First Reformed.)
Stanley Kubrick (Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut, and Doctor Strangelove.)
Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master, Inherent Vice, There Will Be Blood)
Ingmar Bergman (Winter Light, Cries and Whispers, The Seventh Seal.)
Each of these filmmakers have given me countless concepts, ideas, and philosophies to pull apart and challenge me in my own craft. Whether it's two men so deeply in love with the other yet pulled apart by their respective roles in "The Master", or a man delving into the darkest depths of his spiritual crisis in "First Reformed", I am amazed and studious of what these films have awakened in my own work and myself.
